Petroleum Additives

Lets start with Viscosity Index or VI which is used to measure a fluid’s change in viscosity in relation to temperature. The higher the VI the smaller the relative change in viscosity with respect to temperature. Now modifiers or additives increase the VI over a broader range of temperatures.

That brings us to petroleum additives that are specially blended to increase the VI of fuel based product such as: motor oil, fuel additives, greases, power steering fluids, and various hydraulic fluids. Viscosity Modifiers are polymeric molecules that contract when cold and expand when hot, so as an engines temperature increases the viscosity decreases. The addition of modifiers slows down the rate the viscosity decreases.

West Penn Oil, Inc is one of the countries leading packagers of quality lubricants. Their blended motor oil protects your cars engine from the temperature changes it endures every time you start up. Running your car without the proper grade oil can damage the engine. The crankcase in the engine needs an oil with a low enough viscosity to turn over at low temperatures. The oil pump in turn needs to be able to pump that oil at the low temp. The oil also needs to be viscous enough to protect the internal mechanics of the engine at its running temperatures. Viscosity modifiers play a key role in the performance and durability of your cars engine, making it run more efficiently and protecting it from temperature changes. The engine of your car is the single most expensive component, protecting it with a petroleum additive can keep you from costly repairs.
